U.S. Model 1860 Staff and Field Officer Sword

U.S. Model 1860 Staff and Field Officer sword.  Marker marked by Springfield Mass U.S.A. on blade.  Double engraved blade.  Missing wire wrap on handle, the grip is covered with  fish skin, probably ray or shark skin. Scabbard with heavy wear.  Blade in average worn and used condition and approx 31" in length.  Nice double clam shell guards with nice patriotic scenes.  Center scabbard ring missing/broken on scabbard.  Overall a decent example of a M-1860 Staff and Field officer sword.  This is most likley a post 1872 verion.  Typically, the 1860 Staff and Field Officer’s sword was more a badge of rank than a weapon.  In 1872 the M-1860 sword was expanded  for use by all Army officers except medical officers, paymasters, and mounted officers.  The Model 1860 Staff and Field officer sword was eventually replaced by the Model 1902 Officers Saber.
